Culture-led Regeneration: Inclusive Design & Creative Engagement. 

Cities such as Newcastle have invested heavily in regenerating their cultural places and spaces, but many groups - young people, minority ethnic communities, and people from poorer areas - feel ignored and excluded and are rarely engaged in their design or cultural planning and provision.  Architects, artists and others involved in culture, heritage and regeneration meet to consider best practice and new approaches.

The Conference:

Sir Terry Farrell, one of the world's foremost architects (Seoul International Airport; Peak Tower, Hong Kong; Embankment Place, Charing Cross; Great North Museum and Centre for Life, Newcastle upon Tyne) will give the keynote address on design for inclusion.

The conference will share research findings from Northumbria University's extensive studies, from focus groups and a Newcastle City Centre "Culture Trail" travelled and recorded by target groups.  Professor Lynn Dobbs has a national reputation for her work on engaging excluded communities.

Alan Mee will present his research tool for innovative mapping and evaluation of how public space is used and by whom.  Alan was involved in the report for the Arts Council of Ireland on Public Engagement and Architecture.

A panel of architects and artists will explore best practice in design for inclusion and the contribution of artists in animating spaces and reaching diverse audiences.

The Project:

The project has been developed under the Creative Policies for Creative Cities programme with the support of the Culture Programme of the European Union, asking the questions;

• How artist-led policies engage the public in the regeneration of our communal and civic spaces?
• How can we animate our civic and creative culture with meaningful and dynamic inter-cultural exchange?

The Newcastle question specifically addresses the engagement of marginalised groups in urban design and cultural provision.  Dun Laoghaire (Ireland) and Cuenca (Spain) are also part of the wider project.  There will be workshops addressing their respective interests of animating public spaces out of office hours, and of engaging citizens in their historic built environment.

All delegates must register online or via post in order to reserve their place at the conference.  All cancellations should be made at least one week in advance - no later than 4th May 2010 - by emailing office@interculturalarts.co.uk.  Any cancellations made after this date will incur a penalty representing 50% of the ticket price.  Any requests for a colleague to attend on your behalf must be made by emailing from the same address used on the original registration.
